Footsteps Of My Great Grandmother's Ghost. Episode Two

If you missed episode one click here

At 7:58pm, my mother and I arrived at our destination in peace and not in pieces. I came out to open the gate. My mom drove the car inside. I locked the gate and moved to the boot of the car to get out our traveling-bags. Both of us carried them in. I switched on the light and dropped most of our things in the neatly arranged living room. It brought back ugly memories. A year ago, I paid someone to tidy up the sitting room. After doing her job, everywhere was spotless. My ugly great great-grandmother came from nowhere, sat down to watch a soap opera with me. What does she know? She knew absolutely nothing! She polluted the air that day; everywhere smelled of an ungodly unpleasant odor. I gave her the insult of her life. I asked her when she was going to die. How could she torment me with her messiness? How could she not perish and let the young ones grow without her existence!

She glared at me that day. She shook her head and hissed.
I hissed back! She meant nothing to me. She was a nonentity!
Back with my mother, she said to me, “Ireti you can carry what you need tonight to your room. Tomorrow we will know what to do.”

I agreed. I went to my room to keep my handbag and a small box with few of my clothes. My phone rang. It was my dad calling to find out how I was doing. We spoke for a short time. He wanted to speak to his ex-wife. I ran downstairs to find her sitting down on a dinning chair. I gave her my phone and she cut the call.

“What was that for?”  I asked her heatedly. “You shouldn’t have ended the call without my permission.”

She offered my phone to me and I dropped it on the table. She rose on her feet, hiking towards the entrance door.
“Where are you going?” I asked surprised.
She turned to answer me. “We forgot to buy food on our way and I need a bottle of vodka. I will take the key along with me.”
I sighed tiredly. “There's no need. It is 8pm already. Can’t we manage till tomorrow?”
“To manage on an empty stomach?” she asked. “Is that what you mean?”
“It’s late.”
She turned her back on me and opened the door. “I’m coming. I will not stay long.”

*******                                                                                                                                                      Ten minutes later, I was back to my room to bring out my clothes. I spread them on my bed. Few minutes later, I heard the entrance of the living room door open.
“Mom,” I said in a loud voice. “You came back early. Did you see what you wanted?”

There was no answer.
I raised my head. “Mom, are you back?”
There was silence.
I heard footsteps. Ta, Ta, Ta, Ta.
I quickly raced to my door. It was wide open and I shut it instantly with the key. I moved backwards. My right hand placed on my chest. I could hear my own heartbeat.

I was breathing faster.
I hurried to my handbag to grab my phone. I searched.
“Oh no,” I murmured.  I left it on the dining table.
I heard a faint knock on my door. I began to fidget. The fear in me increased!I swallowed a big lump into my throat!

Kpo, Kpo, Kpo.
A creepy knock on my door. The light went off!!There was confusion inside my head. Cold penetrated into my lungs. I could not breathe properly. Where was my mother?

“Open the door!” A gravelly voice commanded.

Tremendous fear gripped me! My body was shaking frightfully. My body was trembling from shredding apart!!

Pa, Pa, Pa, Pa, Pa.
Those are footsteps stepping away from my door. I remembered. It sounded like the footsteps of my great grandmother. My heart began to pound recklessly, getting ready to burst out of my chest!!!

It can't be possible. Is she here to pay me back? Do ghost really exist?

The room was dark and unfriendly. I am scared!
Pa, Pa, Pa, Pa, Pa.

I heard the footsteps again! The handle of my door tampered forcefully. Hot tears ran down my face. I prayed for forgiveness. I know what I did in the past was bad. God is merciful, he will answer my prayers. I wiped away my tears and tiptoed to the wardrobe. I gently opened it but it made a sound. I hid inside.
Gbam! Gbam!! Gbam!!!
The door was forcefully breaking down! I gripped my body with my shaky hands. I thought of my loving father, my grooving, affectionate mother.

Will I ever see them again??

GBAMM!!!!!
The door burst open!
