Murder In Room 16. Episode five

Office Rose let the victim's wife and her lawyer go but before she did, Patrick phone number and his home address were given to her. She dialed his number but it was unreachable. Going to his house might be fruitless if he was not at home. She would continue to try his number. She did some paper work before she left for lunch. Rose ate a big meal of Jollof rice and fried beef. She was very hungry. Rose had missed breakfast in the morning. After she was through with her lunch, she went inside her car and drove off. She drove to the residence of Mr. Osaro. She knocked twice before he answered. The aroma of dry gin welcomed her.
“What do you want officer?” he asked her, walking to sit down on the floor. “Are you here to arrest me?” He turned his back at her and sat on the floor with a bottle of gin by his side.

She walked in and closed the door. “No.” she replied. “I have no evidence that you killed Mr. Kelechi and your wife.” She sat on a chair opposite him.

He laughed out and repeatedly shook his head. “So you really think am a killer?” He hissed.

“Drinking won’t solve anything or bring back your wife.”
“Don’t talk about my wife!” He barked at her. His eyes were red.

“I can see how upset you are. I’m glad you no longer think I was lying about your wife's infidelity.”

“I cheated on my wife severally. She got me twice and I begged her. Maybe she was trying to get back at me.”
“What if you had caught her cheating on you? What would you have done?”

He looked at her face. “What do you think I would have done? Kill her? I have no clue what I would have done but taking her life is not on my list.”
"Your wife must have known who killed her. I am suspecting she also knew the killer of the victim in room 16. Nkechi stated that, your wife was in a hurry when she left the motel."

"Well, I don’t know what to say about that.”

"I need some information about the victim. He was a regular customer, how often did he change his women?”
“I don’t really know but anytime I saw him, he was always with a new face.”
“Did he bring men to your motel too?”
“Men?” he asked confused.
“Yes.”

“I don’t really know.” He swallowed and bowed down his head, he paused a bit and glanced at Rose. “I remember he came with a man younger than him. He came with that man twice. That's all I can remember.”

“Did you suspect anything sexual between them?”

His left eyebrow rose. “Sexual?”
She only gave a nod.
Mr. Osaro widened his eyes. ”I don’t know but was he also involved with men?”
"That’s part of my investigation to find out."
He sighed. “I don’t know officer and I can’t lie to you. You can go to the motel and ask the receptionist there.”

Rose adjusted. “About that, did you suspect anything between any of your receptionists and the victim?”
“I don’t know.”
“Okay.” Rose said and cleared her throat. “Nkechi told me you sacked her.”

"Yes. She betrayed my trust. How can I employee her and at my back keeps secret from me. She knew my wife was having an affair with a customer, she didn’t utter any word to me about it.”

“She was protecting her job.”

“Now she has lost it and I simply do not care. If you came here to beg for her job, I am sorry, she does not deserve it.”
“Nkechi was very unhappy about it. Don’t punish her.”
He took a deep breath and drank some liquor. “I will think about it. The only reason I can take her back is because of her condition.”

Rose eyes blinked. “What condition?” she asked.

“Nkechi is pregnant.”

“Who is responsible?”
“Her fiancĂ© of course.”
“Who is this fiancĂ©?”
“I never asked who he was and I don’t care.”

Officer Rose rose on her feet. “Thank you for your time.” She walked to the door and opened it.

Mr. Osaro spoke. “Next time you come here, make sure it is to tell me who murdered my wife.”

She closed the door, leaving him without an answer.
                *******
Rose drove away from Mr. Osaro’s house. She dialed Patrick's phone number and it rang. He picked his call. She introduced herself and the reason she wanted to speak with him. He agreed to see her. She drove to his abode. After driving for twenty minutes, Rose arrived at Patrick house. He opened the door for her and she sat down with him. He was a tall, slender guy with broad shoulders. He had a light makeup on his face. His nails were trimmed and neat.

"I was given the information that the victim was your lover. Is that correct?”

“Yes he was.” he replied. “Are you here to arrest me. I’m aware it’s a crime in this country and the verdict is 14 years in prison.”

“I am not here for that.” Rose replied. “Your sexuality is no business of mine. How did you find out about Mr. Kelechi demise?”

“His arrogant wife called me the day she was informed. She threatened and accused me of what I absolutely know nothing of. We broke up few weeks ago.”

"You are a suspect. Where were you on the day he died?”

"I can’t remember where I was but I’m innocent.”

“Why did you harass Mrs. Kate Kelechi?”

He frowned. “She was the cause of his money problems. She spent his money lavishly, travelling, buying expensive jewelries and cars.”

“She was his wife and she had the right to do that.”

“I was his lover and I had my expenses too.”
“You should be aware he cheated on you too.”
“I also cheated on him. The relationship was all about sex and money, love was not involved.”

“Did you lodge with him in that motel he was killed?”
He cleared his throat and answered. “Yes and it was four times I went there.”

“But why a motel? The victim was a rich man, he could have afforded an expensive hotel.”

“I asked him too. He said the motel was the perfect hideout for him.”

She stood up to leave. “That will be all for now. I will contact you again if I find you linked with his death.”                                                                                                                                                                        He rose on his feet too. “I am innocent. Have you asked the receptionist he was sexually involved with? In fact the lady was in love with him.”

She looked aback. “At the same motel?”                                                                                                                                 “Yes.”
“Do you know her name?”

He shook his head. I only know she’s light skinned. He also gave her a necklace.”

Rose mouth opened. “Was anything crested on it?”

He sighed and touched his chin. “Yes. 'To my beauty' was crested on it.”

Rose thanked him and dashed out. She called Nkechi’s number but it was switched off. She went back to the station for a report. It was getting late, she drove home to eat and have some sleep. She made dinner and ate. The next day she was going to find Nkechi and interview her. She was a receptionist and light skinned. Although she had not seen the other receptionists but something was not right. After that Rose watched her favorite reality show before taking her bath and went to bed.
At 11pm, the call on her phone woke her up. It was Kate Kelechi calling.

“Hello Mrs. Kelechi. What can I do for you at this late hour?”

“I am so sorry to disturb you. I was rearranging my late husband's room when I saw a report in one of his trousers.”

“What report?”

“A pregnancy report.”

Rose agitated and sat on her bed. “Was a name written on it?”

"Yes.” she replied. “Nkechi Oboli.”
