“You will kill no one Hector,” Weyinmi said to him. “Michael will not turn you into a murderer.”
“That is not what I mean.”
“Then tell me what to do!”
He sighed. “I want you to pretend like you don’t know what he did. It’s two days to your wedding and you should focus on that. The inspector will find a way to allow the criminal confess and put Michael in prison.”
“I swear he will rot in jail!”
The inspector rose on his feet. “He will go to jail when we act fast and get him intelligently. We don’t have any prove but only the words of my insider. I am going to see if there is a way for me to get the criminal Jado and Michael together and see if I can get something to record from their conversation that is linked with the assassination of Mrs. Alice.”
“Can you do that?” Hector asked.
“I can with the help of my insider but money has to be involved.”
“Name your price! I will pay any amount because money is not the problem but the safety of Renee, her mother and my family.”
“And you too,” Weyinmi said. “You should be careful, Michael may go after you.”
“I don’t care! I just want the people I love to be safe!”
His friend could not say anything more.
“I also want you to help me get something, dirt on Chief Samuel Nnaji .” Hector said to the inspector. “I want to blackmail him.”
“You mean the politician?”
“Yes! Can you do that for me?”
He thought for a moment and smiled slightly. “I have something on him and I will send it to you tomorrow.”
My heart is heavy, my mouth is bitter and I am depressed I can never be with the one I love. The tears won’t stop and I will never love no man apart from you Hector and I will always pray for your safety because my unborn child will not be a bastard. He or she will bear your name and that will make me contented because your blood flows in our baby in my womb. I swear, I will miss you every day.
If walls could hear my pain, they would run to tell Renee how I feel without her by my side. I never believed that love existed but with your existence, you changed me. I want your forgiveness Renee, I need you to forgive me for leaving you when you needed me the most. I am nothing but a coward but if I should see you and explain things, I know you will understand. You are a good person and my heart burns that I can never be with you again. I will no longer be the man you want but the man Melissa and my mother wants, a Monster!
(A day to the wedding)
Hillary dressed in a native attire sat down in the large living room of Melissa. She was waiting patiently for her future in-law to come see her.
“Hillary you are welcome,” Melissa said after coming out from the kitchen. She sat close to her. “I was busy supervising what the chef was cooking and remember we are having some guests soon.”
She managed to smile. “I understand.”
“I hope all is well?”
“What is it?” she asked.
Hillary made a face. “Are you happy that Hector is getting married to you?”
Melissa’s eyes changed. “Why won’t I be happy and what kind of a question is that?”
“My brother does not love you and the marriage will not last. What’s the point getting married to him?”
“Your brother does not have a choice than to marry me and make the marriage work. We will never separate and I promise you nothing can stop the wedding.”
“What do you have on my brother that changed his mind to marry you?”
“That is none of your business!” Melissa shouted at her.
“You can bark like a dog but my brother’s happiness is what I want. Hector is no longer the man I used to know. He has changed.”
“And I will make him change the more if you don’t get out from my house.”
“Are you threatening me?”
“Remember you are jobless and daft.” Melissa said and stood up. “I know you very well and I will make sure you don’t get half of your monthly allowance when I become Mrs. Henshaw.”
Hillary stared at her shocked and rose on her feet. “You are pathetic and a daylight witch.” she said. “Family is more important than money. I hate you.”
“And I hate you too. I never liked you because you are indolent and dumb. I might restrict you from seeing your brother after we get married.”
“My mother will hear about your repulsive attitude towards me.”
Melissa laughed gawkily. “Your mother will never believe you. I am a saint in the presence of your mother. Now get out!”
Hillary furiously sauntered away to the entrance door.
“Hillary.” Melissa called her name.
She turned. “What?”
“See you at the wedding.”
“Hoe.” She walked out and slammed the door hard!
Before Hector went home, he drove to the abode of his sister to congratulate Hope and Peter on the success of adopting a three years old girl. She was sleeping when he arrived.
“She’s beautiful,” he said to the new parents after he went to check up on her in the room. “I am happy for the both of you.”
“Thank you Hector.” Peter said.
“Thanks my brother,” Hope said. “How are you holding on?”
“You mean about the wedding?”
“Yes.” she replied.
“I just want it to come and go.”
“Have you heard anything about Renee?”
“No but before I came here the private inspector gave me a video cd of chief Nnaji having sex with a prostitute.”
Hope and Peter stared at each other shocked and back at him.
“What will you do with it?” Hope asked him.
Hector cleared his throat. “Nothing but I will use it to scare Melissa so that I can have a say when we get married.”
“But the video cd can stop the wedding.”
He shook his head. “If I post it, Melissa will leak the documents. The two of us will lose many things especially me when everything involves dad’s investments. I don’t want anything that father worked hard for to go down the drain.”
“Have you told Melissa about it?”
“No.” he replied.
“Why?” she asked surprised.
“I will give it to her after the wedding,” he said. “It is going to be my wedding gift.”
“Good. Have you talked to mom about it?”
“I hardly talk to her Hope, she is also the reason for my unhappy ending.”
“I and Peter will be at the wedding tomorrow.”
“I don’t really need anyone but Felix as my best man.”
“What about Michael? In fact, I have not seen him for some time now.”
“I don’t need Michael, and you will see him when I get him.”
“Get him?” she asked puzzled. “What do you mean by that?”
“When the right time comes, you will know everything. I have to go now.” He rose and Peter and Hope escorted him outside.
(The wedding day)
Hector sat down at the back seat of his Range Rover with Felix inside his compound. They were both dressed in black suits. The driver was ready to turn on the ignition when Mrs. Harriet came out from the house to talk to Hector before they leave to the church. She was dressed in an expensive blue lace, looking radiant.
“Have you heard from Hope this morning?” she asked Hector.
He frowned. “She’s on her way to the church.”
“You should be smiling today.”
“Today is the saddest day of my life.” Hector shut the door and ordered the driver. “Drive now.”
Mrs. Harriet facial expression depreciated. She thought her son must have changed his mindset towards getting married to Melissa but as it got close to the wedding day, it grew worse. She felt she was doing the right thing for her son but now she was having a rethink.
“Mom!” Hillary uttered. Her mother turned to her direction. “What are you thinking about?”
“Nothing my daughter, let’s go.”
“I don’t want to go.”
“You have to because your brother is getting married.”
“But he is not happy.”
Mrs. Harriet sighed. “Do you believe Renee is better with your brother?”
“I no longer care if it’s Renee that will make my brother happy, I just don’t want him to marry Melissa.”
“But she is a good woman and her family is very wealthy and connected just like us. We can never suffer.”
“I don’t care!”
“Renee has nothing to offer him.”
“She will give you grandchildren.”
She shook her stubbornly. “No. Melissa is the right bride for my son.”
Hillary eyed her. “Whatever!”
Michael rushed inside without knocking on Renee’s hotel room door. She agitated on the bed seeing him in her room unexpected.
Michael rushed inside without knocking on Renee’s hotel room door. She agitated on the bed seeing him in her room unexpected.
Renee asked. “I hope there’s no problem?”
He was breathing fast. “I am sorry for not knocking and everything is fine. Can I use your bathroom?”
“Yes.” He walked to the direction of the bathroom, entered and bolted it.
Renee rose on her feet and waited for some minutes before he came out a bit composed.
“Are you sure everything is alright?” she asked, not contended with his first reply.
Michael nodded. “Yes,” he replied and looked around. “Where is your mother?”
“My mother told me she wanted to stroll out.”
“I really don’t know.”
“But she has not fully recovered.”
“At least she is better.” She said and sat down on the bed. “Why did you come here in a rush as if someone was chasing you?”
Michael scratched the back of his neck. “No one was pursuing me and everything is okay. You look beautiful.”
“Thank you.” she said without a smile.
“There is nothing amusing for me to smile about.”
He walked close to her. “Have you eaten today?”
“Yes,” Renee replied. “I have to because of the baby.”
Michael sat near her. “Are you aware that today is Hector and Melissa’s wedding?”
Her eyes peered at him. “Is he really getting married to Melissa?”
“Yes,” he answered. “They are in the church now.”
“Oh no!” she said almost in tears.
He looked at her dazed. “But I showed you their wedding card?”
“I never wanted it to be true!”
“It’s true and you have to let go of him.”
Renee shook her head and started to cry. “I can never let go of him. I hate the fact that I love Hector, I hate the fact that I love Hector. God take this feeling away from me I beg you.”
Michael held her hand.
“Don’t touch me!” she screamed at him and he quickly removed his hand. She sat down on the floor wailing. “I hate the fact that I love Hector, I want this emotions to leave me, please Lord make it stop.”
Hector and Melissa stood facing each other with the preacher ministering. A tight frown plastered on his face and he glared at the bride with a scorn. Her beaming face annoyed him intensely.
PREACHER..….”We are gathered together here in the sign of God and in the face of this church to join together this man and this woman in holy matrimony, which is commended to be honorable among all men……..If any person can show just the cause why they may not be joined together- let them speak now or forever hold their peace.”
Hillary stared at the couple with anger.
Mrs. Harriet who sat by her daughter left side was no longer comfortable with the sadness in her son’s eyes.
PREACHER spoke again...…”If any person can show just the cause why they may not be joined together- let them speak now or forever hold their peace.”
Hillary looked at her mother and whispered.
“Won’t you say anything?”
She whispered back. “Leave me alone, I don’t want to look like a bad woman in front of everyone.”
Her daughter hissed and a woman seated by her right side looked at her and riveted her eyes back to the couple.
PREACHER spoke… Friends, we have joined here today to share with Melissa Nnaji and Hector Henshaw an important moments in their lives. Their time together, they have seen their love……”
Hillary rose on her feet, eyes turned on her but she didn’t care but walked majestically towards the entrance door to look for a quiet place to think. Cars were everywhere and it was noisy. She walked far to reach outside the gate and looked at her right direction to see her elder sister standing. She was reading some documents beside her car.
She motioned towards her. “Hope why are you not inside?”
She closed the file and answered her. “I can’t watch my brother suffer.”
Hillary shrugged. “I am not happy about this.”
Hope glanced at her sister surprised. “How is that possible?”
“Seriously sis I am not happy. That Melissa is not a good person at all. She is a big pretender.”
“Are you just finding out?”
“Mom is very stubborn! I think she does not want the wedding to go on anymore but she does not want to stop it because she will look like a bad person.”
“But mom can’t stop the wedding because of the blackmail.”
“Blackmail?” she asked stunned.
“You never knew about it?”
“Nope.” she replied.
“The documents in my hands are what Melissa is using to make Hector marry her. It contains things that can destroy everything dad worked……”
PREACHER…….Do you Melissa Ada Nnaji take Hector Ebuka Henshaw to be your husband – to live together after God’s ordinance – in sickness and in health, for richer, for poorer, for better, for worse, in sadness and joy, forsaking all others, keep yourself only unto him as long as you both shall live?”
Melissa grinned widely. “Yes I do.”
PREACHER turned to ask straight-faced Hector his own. ”….Do you Hector Ebuka Henshaw take…..”
“Are you saying these documents can bring down the company and other things?” Hillary asked.
“Can I take a good look at them?”
“Hillary there is no need, nothing can be done.”
“Please let me see.” Hope handed over the files to her. She opened it and went through them.
Her jaw dropped. The look in her eyes got Hope’s attention.
“What is it?” she asked her younger sister.
“These documents are familiar to me.”
“What do you mean?”
“These documents were not signed by father when mom gave them to me few weeks ago and I never read them because mom told me the contents written on the documents will give me shares at the company.”
“But that is father’s signature.” Hope said confused.
Hillary shook her head repeatedly. “Father never signed them,” she said. “Have you forgotten I used to forge dad’s signature to collect money from the bank? I signed these documents and I can prove they are mine if Melissa decides to take Hector to court.”
“Are you sure?”
“I signed them,” she said. “The signatures on the documents are fake!”
Hope widened her eyes. “Oh my God! We have to stop the wedding,” she said excitedly. “We can stop the wedding!!”
Hillary face cheered up and turned speedily and ran leaving her sister who could not catch up with her.
PREACHER… “We are waiting for your answer son.” He said to Hector who refused to reply to the first question. Everyone including Melissa were all waiting for a ‘Yes I do’ answer.
Hector sighed. “Yes I…”
To be continued... tomorrow by 10 am.
