Dabota remained in bed until the following morning. It was a hot atmosphere yet she refused to come out and choose to lay on her bed and think about what happened the previous night and her life. She thought why would the man she called her father come back to ask questions about her life, come back to search for her. What gave him the right to do so.

What does he want after all these years?  She questioned herself. She remembered leaving her home at the age of seventeen years old. She was a kindhearted young girl who loved her family despite her poor upbringing. She was her mother’s only child and the first born of her father. She knew her dad had another child somewhere with another woman she never met. The other woman and her child was always the cause the arguments between her mother and father.

She closed her eyes to think about the day she left home. She did not only leave but ran for her life. That night was the saddest day of her life. Sometimes Dabota thought she should not have left just like that but wait and fight.

Dakota met a young man that night that took advantage of her because he gave her accommodation for the night, he took her virginity. He gave her one thousand naira and threw her out the next morning. She looked for where to get a good meal because she was famished and desired good food as breakfast in a restaurant.

An older man winked at her, paid her bills and took her to a hotel to sleep with. He paid her five thousand naira and from that day he kept in touch, lodged her for weeks. She used the opportunity to find rich men who paid her very well. That was how she started to find comfort in older men.

Dabota saved some money, enrolled for different examinations to enter into the university. She never wanted friends who would judge her, she stayed on her own until she met Rebecca and Quinn who accepted her the way she was. The only regret she has is not telling them the truth about her past, about the day she ran, flew out from her father’s house and never looked back.

Her cook, Debbie knocked on her door thrice before she answered.

“What is it?”

“This is 10 am in the morning.”

Dabota rolled her eyes. “So?”

“This is unlike you not to come out on a Sunday morning. Are you not going to church?”

"Come in.”

She opened, entered, closed the door and stood opposite her boss.

“Have you ever seen me go to church?”

“You promised to follow me today,” she replied. “I have been waiting for you to come out. I got worried because this is unlike you. You are an early riser.”

“I don’t feel like coming out today,” she said softly. “I will stay in door.”

“Are you okay?”

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“Is it about what happened yesterday?”

Her face turned red. “Did I not tell you I do not want to talk about it?”

“I know and I am very sorry. You have been very open to anyone around you about your life. You don’t hide the kind of life style you choose, what worries me is the way you acted yesterday. I was surprised when you said you lied that your father threw you out.”

Dabota sighed and rose from her bed. She walked to the window and opened the curtain to glance outside. After a minute, she turned her gaze to Debbie.

“I know I lied about my father throwing me out of his house. He never caught me with his friend and I was a good girl. I loved my family very much but there was something that destroyed everything.”

“What destroyed everything? What really happened that you are not in touch with your family?”

“I am in touch with my family. They are Rebecca and Quinn.”

“I know how close you are to them but I am sure you miss your family, the ones that share the same blood with you.”

“I don’t miss my father.”

“What about your mother?”

“I don’t want to talk about her!!” she barked.

Debbie apologized.

“Please leave my room.” Dabota said without looking straight at her face.

“What about breakfast?”

“Breakfast can wait,” she said. “I will call you when I need your attention. I want to think about my life.”

“Where the hell do you think you are going to?” Jackson asked Quinn after they came back from church. “We just arrived home and you still want to go out?”

“It’s just for one hour or two,” she said. “I will be back soon.”

“I will not let you go just like that. Your behavior is suspicious.”

She stared at him angrily. “What do you mean suspicious? If I was in my house would you have been there to stop me from leaving?”

“You are in my house and not your house!”

“I can see you want to quarrel with me.”

“I am not trying to quarrel with you Quinn, I am your future husband and I have the right to know exactly where you are going to.”

“If my whereabouts is what you want to know, fine! I am going to see Dabota.”

His left eyebrow rose. “For what?”

She chuckled mockingly. “You are still asking me questions after I have told you where I am going to?”

“Quinn.” He called her name.

“I don’t believe you.”

“You can call Dabota to confirm.”

“That will not change anything, Dabota can lie for you but I will let you go on one condition.”

“I will not take any condition because you are not my husband. You don’t have that right yet and I am beginning to get suspicious of your act.”

“What do you mean?” Jackson asked.

“What I am trying to say is if I become your wife, you will be controlling!”

“I am no trying to control you and I don’t intend to. I only want the truth from you Quinn.”

“What makes you think I am lying?”

Jackson puts his hands on his waist. “I feel you are lying but if it is truly Dabota’s place you are going to, there’s no problem.”

Quinn looked at him irately. “I will be back soon.” She turned and open the door to leave. Her lover stood thinking about what she could be hiding, especially with her younger he has never met but spoke with him only on the phone. He thought he should contact Hanks and ask him what was really going on between the both of them. He changed his mind, he was going to ask Quinn one last time and if she continues to act innocently, he will have to contact Hanks and pay him to tell him the truth.

Quinn Dominic entered into her car, turned on the ignition and drove out of the magnificent compound of Jackson. She knew she lied to her boyfriend about where she was going to. She needed to make a quick visit to someone. That someone was special to her heart and no one can stop her from going to meet the true love of her life.

Rebecca and Desmond drove back home after church. They had their baths one after the one and Rebecca went to the kitchen to prepare lunch later. Her husband came to the living room to watch his team play their match. His phone rang, he picked and spoke on the phone. Rebecca tiptoed to the doorstep of her kitchen to listen to his conversation.

“Hello baby.” he said and paused to listen to the caller and spoke again. “I will see you in the evening. I have booked a room already and I will send you a text of the location.” He ended the call.

Rebecca did not say anything but went back to what she was doing. After she finished cooking white rice and vegetable sauce with snail, she served the both of them at the dining table. Desmond joined her and they ate in silence.

He went to his bedroom to rest after eating. Rebecca used the quiet chance to call her father.

“My angel,” Dr. Mayowa said. “I am very happy to hear from you.”

“Good afternoon dad.”

“Good afternoon. How are you?”

Rebecca sighed. “I am doing okay, just a bit weak.” she said in a wobbly voice.

“Weak? Do you know the cause of it?”

“No dad, there is nothing to worry about. I think its stress.”

“Stress?” he asked. “Is everything okay with you? I do not like the sound of your voice.”

“You worry all the time.’ she said in a loud voice this time.

“Are you sure?”

She did not want her father to denote the sadness in her voice. She was nervous about telling him how she feels. Why she wanted to cry, the suffering she was going through in her matrimonial home. The call Desmond made was still over her head. It made her know her husband was cheating on her. No other man has touched her sexually except Desmond.

“Hello, are you there?” her father asked after the long silence.

“Yes father, I will come to the house to see you.”

“When!” he expressed in an excited tone.

“I think in three to four days’ time.”

“Please my angel, don’t change your mind.”

“I won’t,” she said and smiled. “I will see you very soon.”

“I will prepare something for you. I don’t mind cooking myself.”

Rebecca laughed, she felt very happy. “I know you are a terrible cook and I will never forget the watery Ogbono soup you prepared to impress me when I gained admission into the university.”

Her father roared into laughter. “You remembered!”

“I can never forget father, I can’t forget the good times we shared together. I miss that, I miss everything!”

“Can we go back to the way things were?” he asked. “I missed that too.”

“We will talk better when I come and see you. I need to go, take care of yourself.”

“Take care of yourself my angel. Bye.”

Rebecca turned her back to see her husband standing. “Oh!”

“I can see you have rekindled the lost love between your lazy self and your father,” he said in a unemotional tone. He walked to get close to her. “You two have settled?”

“I tho..thought..y..you were..slee..sleeping?” she stammered.

“Answer my question!”

She swallowed. “We never quarreled,” she said. “We just had a little misunderstanding.”

“Because of the divorce?”

“And you are back laughing with him after he cheated on your mom?”

“My mother is living well now. She has forgotten about everything.”

“But that does not stop me from calling your father a cheating asshole.”

“Don’t insult my father!”

“You are supporting him now?” he asked. “After what he did?”

“I will never support bad thing but I will never allow you insult my father! What happened is all in the past.”

Desmond laughed sarcastically. “I never knew you to be very dumb.”

Rebecca’s eyes were becoming watery, she was fighting hard not to cry in front of her husband. “You are insulting my father because he cheated. What about you? What will you call yourself for cheating on me?”

“What are you talking about?”

“I heard your conversation with a woman you are going to see today,”

His eyes were bloodshot! “What gave you the right to listen to my conversation?!!”

“I am your wife!!”

“Don’t shout at me!” he gave her a slap on her right side of her face. Rebecca saw stars dancing round her eyes.

She touched her face slightly and tears dropped. “May God forgive you.”

“How dare you call God into this?”

Rebecca became furious! “What did I do to be maltreated by you? If you know you don’t want me anymore tell me and I will give you a divorce. I am tired! Do you want to kill me first? I am even ashamed to call you my husband. You have never been remorseful for causing the death of my two pregnancies I lost because of the beating you gave me. Desmond what exactly do you want from me?!!”

Desmond took his hand down to his waistline, unbuckled his belt.

“What are you doing?” Rebecca asked fearfully.

He dragged his belt out and gripped her blouse. “Before I go out, I will teach you a lesson you will never forget."
Brown and his cousin Pamela were through eating dinner. She packed their plates and went to meet him at the verandah of their house.
“I wanted to give you enough time before I would ask what really happened last night.”

He smiled at her. “I thought you have forgotten?”

Pamela sat beside him. She was a fair and slender young lady. She was in her fourth year at the university. “How can I forget when I have never seen you in that way before? What really happened? Did you not like the art event?”

“I liked the event but something happened.”

He explained everything to her.

She stared at him shocked! “But you can’t fall in love with a married woman.”

“I didn’t know, she never had a wedding ring on her finger. Even if there was a ring, I would still have fallen with her.”

“But you can’t have her.”

“Who says?”

“She belongs to another man and if you think she will leave him for you, you better start to forget about her.”

“I can’t Pamela!” he uttered. “I think about her all the time. I have never felt like this for any other girl apart from her.”

“You don’t even know if she likes you.”

“She likes me! I know she felt something for me. We were lost in each other’s eyes. Pamela I need to do something!”

“Something like what?” she asked.

“Rebecca does not need an abusive man for a husband. I am still wondering why she is still with him.”

“Maybe she loves him very much, remember love is blind.”

“I’m so confuse.”

Pamela touched him on his shoulder. “Don’t be,” she said. “Love conquers it all. If you are meant to be with her as her partner, it will surely happen. But don’t put your hope on her, she might disappoint you.”

“What is it with you women?” he asked angrily. “Why do some of you bury yourselves in an abusive marriage? Some women stay until the man kills them!”

“And some of you world people will still criticize a woman for leaving her husband. They won’t care what the woman has gone through. They will call her a prostitute.”

Brown sighed. “You are right but we all have to do the right thing.”

“And the right thing is?”

“Let’s plan on how to get Rebecca to be mine.”

“Do you really love her?”

“I will do anything just to make you happy and I will do whatever you want me to do but we need to focus on your father’s health first.”

“I know.” he said. “When my father gets better, I will concentrate on how to make Rebecca feel like the only woman in the universe. I will make her feel happiness she has never felt before. I will make sure I put a smile on her face before she falls asleep.”

Pamela smiled. “You really have good plans for her.”

Brown thought of Rebecca’s face and grinned. “Yes I do,” he said. “I want her to be the mother of my unborn children.”

“You what?!” Dabota exclaimed over the phone with Quinn. She called the actress the next day to find out how she was doing. “Why do you want to break up with Jackson? He’s caring!”

“If he is caring, you can have him.” Quinn said. “I am fed up!”

“Fed up of what?”

“I.. I d..don't think I love him anymore.”

“What do you mean you don’t think you are no longer in love with him?”

“Dabota you won’t understand.”

“Make me understand because Jackson and you were all over each other at the art event and at the club. Have you told Rebecca?”

“Of course not!” she voiced out. “Rebecca will surely advise me to stay. I thought you would be on my side?”

“I can never support you on this. Jackson loves you and he is the only one that can tolerate you because of the nature of your job!”

“Nonsense! Someone else can tolerate me!”

“Is there someone else?”

Quinn paused. She did not want her to have a clue if she had another lover.

“Are you cheating on Jackson?” Dabota asked suspiciously. “Are you hiding something from me and Rebecca?”

“Quinn!!” she screamed her name. “Tell me the truth or I will come over to meet you wherever you are!”

She cut the call and switched her two phones immediately.

Rebecca waited for Jackson to leave for work before she called her father that she won’t be able to make it to his place because she was not feeling fine. He told her he can come over to check up on her but she refused.

“Are you sure my angel?” he asked.

“Yes dad. I will see you when I get better.”

“Please go to the hospital and treat yourself.”

“I will dad.” She said and cut the call. Rebecca did not want to hear any more from her father, he would surely know she has been crying. She heard the horn of a car and in few seconds, someone was knocking on her door.

“Who is that?”

“It is me Dabota.”
She widened her eyes. She wasn’t expecting her friend. She walked to the entrance door and opened, Dabota gave Rebecca a tight hug even when she hesitated. Rebecca screeched out of pain.

“What is it?” she asked. “Are you in pain?”

Rebecca moved backwards to sit down carefully. “I am fine.”

“No you are not!”

She looked at her and found out she wasn’t holding anything. “You didn’t buy the artwork for me?”

“Someone bought it before I could buy it.” she said and sat beside Rebecca.

“But I told you on time.”

“I am sorry,” Dabota apologized. “I went to meet the artist to give me the name of the buyer so I could pay double for it but she did not tell me.”

“I really like that art.”

“I know and I will contact Carrie Pretorius to draw another one for you.”

Rebecca did not say anything.

“I will not take silence for an answer if you don’t tell me why you screamed like you were in pains.”

“I am fine.” she said softly.

Dabota dragged Rebecca to her side and touched her body all over. Rebecca cried like a baby. She could not bear the pain she was going through. Her friend rose up quickly to raise her top.

“Oh My God!!! What am I seeing? Desmond did this to you?!” They were marks all over her back and stomach.
“Desmond flogged me all over my body last night with a belt.”

“What!! We need to do something!! You can’t do this to yourself by staying with a psycho for a husband! You deserve more than this!!”

“He is my husband and…”

“I do not want you to say any more word because I am tired of your stupidity! I will take you to a pharmacy and you will show me the direction of your father’s house.”

“I do not want to go.”

“You will!”

“I have taken care of everything,” Rebecca said in anguish. “Don’t worry.”

A loud knock on the door stopped Dabota from talking. She decided to check who was at the door and a young man with a wrapped parcel stood in front of her.

“Yes, can I help you?”

“I am looking for Rebecca Tega.”

Rebecca stood and strolled to join them. “I am Rebecca.”

He gave her a sheet for her to sign and receive the parcel he brought for her. Dabota left to sit down on the sofa. She was trying not to show her friend how heated she was inside. If Desmond dare comes home while she was in their house, she would have fought with him, using every item she sees to hit him.

Rebecca signed, took the parcel and the man left. She opened it and found out it was the art of the elderly woman holding a baby. Her face brightened, she couldn’t believe she was smiling with the pain she felt.

“Why did you lie that you didn't buy the art for me?” she asked Dabota.

“I swear, I did not.”

She glanced at her surprised. “Then who?”

“You can check.”

She checked inside, found a short note and opened to read it silently.

‘Hey Becca! I heard you when you said this art was the most beautiful thing you have ever seen. I hope you are smiling right now. I also forgot to tell you that, you are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my life.
With love. Brown Smith.

“Who is it from?”

“Oh! I should have known he was the one that bought it.”

Rebecca stared at her friend. “Dabota.” she said with tears in her eyes.

“What is it dear?” she asked in a worried tone.

“Do you think I can ever find happiness?”

She rose and went to hold her hands. “You will. I promise to make that happen and no man on earth will stop me.”
